Turmeric ... that exotic spice that’s in Indian curry and other delectable savory dishes is not only flavorful and loaded with healthy benefits for humans, but it’s also great for your dog, too!

What is Turmeric?

First of all, even though you may often hear it pronounced as Tumeric, it is actually pronounced and spelled tur’-me-ric.

However, you choose to say it, be sure to add it this exciting healthy nutrient to your pet’s daily diet!

Turmeric comes from the root of the Curcuma Longa plant and has been used for over 4000 years in ancient Ayurvedic and Asian cultures as a remedy and as a seasoning for delicious food.

The root is harvested and dried, then ground to a fine powder that is sold in loose powder, capsule, or oil form to supplement wellness and flavor foods.

The main active ingredient in turmeric is Curcumin, and curcumin is what provides amazing benefits for the health and wellbeing of your pet!

How Does Turmeric Work in Your Dog’s Body?

The natural function of the canine body, when it has been injured or develops an infection, is to dilate blood vessels.

This sends red and white blood cells quickly to the injured part or site of infection to start the healing process. The natural effect of this dilation is swelling, pain, and inflammation.

This is a helpful function at the start of injury or infection, but, in the long term, inflammation stops being beneficial and begins to aggravate the condition. Turmeric, with high levels of curcumin, constricts the blood vessels back to their non-injured state, reduces swelling and relieves pain fast.

Taken internally, turmeric has shown in studies to be as fast and effective as ibuprofen for relieving pain and reducing inflammation, without the side effects often experienced with steroidal medications.

Turmeric also contains quercetin, a plant flavonoid with antiviral, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties that reduce stress on the body and improve and support the immune system.

Add turmeric to your pet’s daily diet:

The best way to introduce turmeric into your pet’s daily diet is to add it directly to their food.

Turmeric is most easily digested and most effectively delivered to the bloodstream when it is combined with a healthy fat source, such as coconut oil, olive oil, ghee, or avocado oil (not corn, palm or vegetable oils)

The addition of black pepper provides the chemical Bioperine, which delivers maximum curcumin to the bloodstream.

This potent combination of turmeric and black pepper stimulates the digestive enzymes in the pancreas, making the nutrients quickly bioavailable to the body! Here’s an easy and tasty way to prepare a golden paste for dogs that is healthy, easy to digest, and dogs love it, too!

  • Mix ½ cup of turmeric powder with 1 cup of water, 1 ½ teaspoons of ground black pepper, and ¼ cup of coconut oil.
  • Stir over medium heat until it thickens into a paste (approximately 7 minutes)
  • Allow to cool, and store in the refrigerator in a glass jar
  • Mix the paste in with your pet’s daily dog food.

How much turmeric can I give my dog?

A good way to measure the appropriate amount of paste is to give ¼ teaspoon of paste per 10 pounds of body weight.

(For example, if your dog weighs 20 lbs., the appropriate daily amount of turmeric paste would be ½ teaspoon.)

Another easy recipe makes more of an oil than a paste.

To make a fresh, daily dose, mix ¼ teaspoon of turmeric with 2 teaspoons of coconut oil. Add 6-8 grains of ground black pepper Drizzle over your pet’s daily food supply.

This dosage would be appropriate for up to a 10 lb. dog, so increase by ¼ teaspoon amounts for every 10 lbs. of body weight to calculate the correct amount for your pet

Use turmeric externally as a remedy for injuries and skin ailments:

Apply turmeric directly to wounds, cuts, scrapes, bites, rashes, and fungal infections.

The anti-inflammatory action of turmeric disinfects the injury, reduces swelling, and relieves pain!

Here’s an easy recipe for a natural turmeric paste for external use on pet injuries:

Mix ¼ cup turmeric and ½ cup water, and heat on low on the stovetop for 5 minutes until it forms a paste. Store in a jar in the refrigerator and use whenever needed.
